Project Overview
Plants Vs Cities was developed in three days during the 2023 GMTK Game Jam, where it ranked among the top 50 most popular entries. The theme of the jam was "Role Reversal", challenging developers to subvert traditional game mechanics. Our approach was to invert the city-building genre, transforming it into a "city-destruction" game where players spread plants to reclaim urban landscapes.
My Contributions
  • Designed the core gameplay loop that dictates player progression and challenge.
  • Developed the real-time simulation logic governing city updates and plant expansion.
  • Adjusted economy and growth pacing to ensure engaging strategic decisions.
  • Implemented dynamic NPC opposition mechanics that react to player progress.

Conversion and Suspicion form the game's primary victory and failure conditions. Players win when an entire city block is converted into plant life. However, Suspicion acts as an escalating challenge—when it reaches a critical threshold, APGs (Anti-Plant Groups) deploy to counteract the spread. These AI-driven adversaries attempt to reclaim the city and suppress further plant growth, forcing players to adapt their strategy.
